You can’t dress up as a monkey without having the must-have accessory, the banana.  Your child can be the top banana with this colorful inflatable banana. Monkeys love bananas but they can’t always find them in every place they live. Therefore, they eat what they can such as leaves, flowers, seeds and sometimes small insects and reptiles.

Sock monkeys still remain as popular today as they did when they were created in Victorian times. Back then there was a craze for imitation stuffed animals that swept had through Europe to North America. Because of the interest at that time in Africa and exotic species, mothers would make home-made stuffed animals for their children, especially monkeys.

Unfortunately, the Nelson Knitting Company was not very happy when it discovered that its socks were being used to make sock monkeys. It was in 1953 that the company disputed the design patent on the sock monkey pattern and was awarded the patent in 1955. The company then began to include the pattern with every pair of socks and used the sock monkey in their promotional campaigns.

In 1992 the Nelson Knitting Company was acquired by Fox River Mills and the red heel monkey sock is still in production today.

Sock monkeys are so popular that in 2005 the first Sock Monkey Madness Festival was held in Rockford, Illinois. Since then the Festival has become an annual event and draws in thousands of people with attractions such as the local history of the knitting industry, creation of sock monkeys, workshops, book signings, talent contents and a film festival.

Sock Moneys have appeared frequently in popular culture. They have appeared in literature such as the 1998 novel, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver where there is a sock monkey named Saint Matthew, a toy belonging to the narrator, Ruth May.

In 2003 Cece Bell wrote and illustrated a series of children’s books about sock monkeys including Sock Monkey Goes to Hollywood, Sock Monkey Boogie-Woogie and Sock Monkey Rides Again.

Another wonderful book to look at if you adore sock monkeys is Sock Monkeys: 200 out of 1,863 by Arne Svenson. It features photographs of vintage sock monkeys collected by Ron Warren since 1985. At the time the book was printed (2002), Warren had collected 1,863 sock monkeys.

Not only have there been books about sock monkeys but also movies and television appearances. The most recent appearance being in the 2007 movie, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. In a 2008 episode of the Fairly Odd Parents, Timmy’s dad quit his job to become a sock monkey salesman.

Even in this electronic age, simple and ageless toys like sock monkeys still remain popular with kids. They not only make great gifts, but wearing a sock monkey costume will add a lot of fun to any dress-up event.
